Club History

Ballingarry GAA Club was founded in 1887 in the historic parish of Ballingarry and The Commons. In that year Tipperary defeated Galway in the first All – Ireland senior hurling championship. The Club has fielded many fine teams in hurling, football and camogie through the years at minor, u.21, junior and senior level. The Juvenile Club caters very successfully for all from u.6 to u.16. with many notable successes.

Ballingarry’s first game in 1887 was against Drangan played in Fethard. In the early years teams had 21 players. The Ballingarry team at that time was known
as Ballingarry ‘Harp & Shamrocks’. Other teams in the parish or connected to the parish were Commons Smith O’Briens, Farranrory, Crohane & Ballintaggart. Over the years there were three playing fields in The Commons : behind Websters pub, Jack Grace’s and Michael Barrett’s. Championship Matches were played in all three. Tipperary played Kilkenny in The Commons in the 1920’s. Ballingarry training and playing took place in Tobin’s, Peter O’Briens and Watty Brett’s. Ballintaggart trained in Fennelly’s.

In 1985 with the purchase of the Parish Sportsfield in The Commons it gave Ballingarry GAA Club the use of training and playing pitches and a Clubhouse. In 1997 the Club purchased land near the Village and development commenced the following year. In 1999 the new field was blessed by Mons. Peter O’Sullivan and was officially opened in 2000. In 2002 planning permission was granted for the erection of the Clubhouse and work commenced in February 2003. The following year Sr. Teresa Walsh unveiled a plaque in memory of her Uncle Mons. Peter O’Sullivan following blessing of the new Clubhouse by Fr. Tom Breen. Keep fit classes commenced in the excellently equipped gym in 2005. Club development continued in 2008 with the erection of The Ned Meagher Stand.
